PREGAME: 4/15/23 Rising vs Monterey Bay

Writer's picture: Bryan WallerBryan Waller

Rising returns to 38th/Washington on April 15th after they defeated Birmingham Legion 2-1 last week in Birmingham. This week Rising (1-1-2 5 points) welcomes west coast opponent Monterey Bay (2-2-1 7 points) for the first meeting between the two sides this year.

Rising is currently on a 2 game winning streak after defeating Greenville in the US Open Cup on Wednesday, then Birmingham on Easter Sunday. Rising has been progressively improving in some aspects of the game, but the defense still raises questions in my opinion. Rising were fortunate enough to have Birmingham in an offside position when the Legion put the ball into the back of the net twice. Rising also had a goal taken off after they were ruled offside as well. Birmingham also raised questions of the rising back line when they were able to score at will just one minute after rising scored to go up 1-0. Ultimately a goal by Harvey in the 68th minute lead Rising to their first league victory and three points of the year. Harvey's performance on Sunday lead to him being on the team of the week and became one of six players since 2017 to have a goal, 5 tackles won, and 14 duals won in a single game.

Last week Monterey Bay faced New Mexico and defeated them 4-2. Monterey worked with less possession for this game and were still able to capitalize on their chances. This should be something to watch for rising this week as they like to control possession by large margins throughout games. Moneterey saw a brace from Volesky last week where he scored in the 50th and 71st minute and also assisted in the Gleadle goal in the 40th minute. In addition to scoring a goal, Gleadle saw his name on the scoresheet two more times assisting in the Dixon goal in the 33rd minute and Volesky goal in the 71st. Frank Yallop runs a scary looking attack with Gleadle and Volesky looking to dominate the attacking third and to be a handful for defenders.

Make your way out to 38th/Washington early to enjoy tailgating and good times with friends and family! Kick-off is at 7:30 Arizona time.
